Read this before anything else

Labor Day is Monday, September 7. You are arriving into the busiest weekend 30A sees after July. Friday through Monday means full beach-access lots by 9am, hour waits at every restaurant, and heavy northbound traffic on US-331 on Monday. Tuesday the 8th, it empties out like someone pulled a drain plug. The schedule below leans local and early through the weekend and saves the driving for Sunday and Tuesday.

Text FLAG to 31279 before you leave. That's the South Walton Fire District beach flag alert. Double red means the Gulf is legally closed and the fine is $500. Purple means jellyfish. On a red-flag day with these three, knee deep really is too deep.

Load-in

Thursday's drive

I-65 south to Montgomery, then US-331 all the way down through Luverne, Opp and Florala to Freeport, then east on 30A. It's the standard Birmingham-to-30A route and most of the back half is two-lane. Leaving at six buys you the empty half of US-331 and puts you at the house near check-in.

Birmingham → Seagrove

Thu, Sept 3Long day

Load the car Wednesday night. Kids ride in pajamas; change them at the first stop.

  • Pull out early
Breakfast in the car. Snejana should sleep the first leg.
  • Clanton — first stretch
Peach Park at exit 205. Bathrooms, grass to run on, peach ice cream if you're feeling generous at 7am.
  • Montgomery — leave I-65 for US-331
Last easy interstate services for a while. Top off the tank here even if you don't need it.
  • Luverne, AL — real stop
Diapers, lunch prep, let Slavik burn ten minutes. US-331 gets thin south of here.
  • Opp / Florala — state line
Last cheap gas before Florida. Florala's lakefront park is a decent leg-stretch.
  • Freeport, FL
You're 25 minutes out. Cross the Choctawhatchee Bay bridge and the kids will notice the water.
  • Publix, Watercolor Crossings
110 Watercolor Way, ~4 mi west of the house. Full stock-up now beats a second trip later. One adult shops, one adult walks kids around the parking lot.
  • Kill time until check-in
If check-in is 4pm, park at Seaside and let them run on the Central Square lawn. Don't sit in the car.
  • Into the house — safety sweep first
Before anything else: outlet covers in, stair gate up, pool gate latched, balcony doors locked. Then unload. See the water note below.
  • Toes in the water, nothing more
Ten-minute walk to the sand. Sets the tone and buys you a calmer bedtime.
  • Dinner in, or Seagrove Village MarketCafe
2 mi west on 395, unfussy, seafood and burgers, open till 8:30. On a Thursday before Labor Day you can probably walk in at 5.
  • Everyone down
Pack-n-play in the darkest room, sound machine on, trash bags taped over any window that faces a streetlight.

The pool is the actual risk on this trip

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages one to four, and vacation rentals are where it happens — unfamiliar layout, unfenced pool, sliding doors that don't latch, and four adults each assuming another one is watching. Within ten minutes of walking in the door: check whether the pool has a working gate and self-latching lock, and check every ground-floor door for a chime or alarm. If there's no barrier between Slavik and open water, one adult is the designated water watcher at all times, phone down, and you hand that job off out loud. Everything else on this page is optional. That isn't.

The week

Day by day

One anchor per day, nothing more. Beach from 8 to 11 before the heat, the crowds and the parking; house from noon to three for lunch and naps; something low-effort in the late afternoon; dinner at five because every good place on 30A is a 90-minute wait by 6:30. Highs are upper 80s all week with afternoon storm chances, so mornings are not just easier, they're drier.

Settle in

Friday, Sept 4Stay local

Don't drive anywhere today. Learn the house, learn the walk to the beach.

  • Slow breakfast at the house
Someone runs to Donut Hole on 98 if you want the ceremonial vacation donuts. It's 12 mi west — worth it once, not twice.
  • Beach, Eastern Lake access
493 Eastern Lake Rd, about a mile from the house. Small lot, so early matters. The lake outfall pools up shallow and warm right where it meets the sand — that pool is the single best thing on this trip for a nine-month-old and a two-year-old. Depth varies; scout it before you set Snejana down.
  • Rinse and retreat
Outdoor shower, baby powder on dry skin to sheet the sand off, back to the house.
  • Lunch, then naps
Protect this. The rest of the day depends on it.
  • Pool or sprinkler
Cash has energy left that the beach didn't take. The other two don't.
  • Seaside Airstream Row
2215 E 30A, 5 minutes west. Line of food trucks around Central Square — grilled cheese, crepes, tacos. Order separately, eat on the lawn, no reservation, no high chair politics. Sundog Books next door if anyone still has patience.
  • Sunset from the Seaside boardwalk
Sun's down around 7:25. Leave before the last light so bedtime doesn't slip.

Panama City day

Saturday, Sept 5Day trip

Race City opens at noon on Saturday and is closed Monday through Wednesday, so this is the day. Beach early, nap hard, then drive east.

  • Beach, early and short
On a Labor Day Saturday the Eastern Lake lot is gone by 8:30. Two hours, no big setup, so the drive later doesn't land on top of a full beach day.
  • Home, rinse, lunch, naps
Non-negotiable. Slavik and Snejana both need to be asleep before this drive, not during the fun part.
  • Drive east on US-98
About 40 minutes to the Front Beach Rd strip. Same time zone, no clock change.
  • Race City
9523 Front Beach Rd. Go-karts, rides and a big arcade. Cash rides Lil' Speedy only — see the heights note. Slavik is too small for every kart here, so he gets the arcade and the kiddie rides.
  • Coconut Creek Family Fun Park
Three 18-hole mini golf courses and the Gran Maze, a walk-through human maze. Open till 11:30p so there is no clock pressure. Kids five and under free, which covers both little ones. No go-karts here despite what everyone tells you. This is the part Slavik can actually do.
  • Dinner on the strip
Eat in PCB rather than driving home hungry with three tired kids. Front Beach Rd is wall to wall casual options and nothing needs a reservation at five thirty.
  • Home
Back at the house by eight. Bath, bed, done. Ghost crab hunt moves to tomorrow night.

Heights will decide the go-kart part

Race City's three big tracks — Gran Prix, PCB 500 and the Speed Track — all require 54 inches. A six-year-old is usually around 45, so plan on Cash not driving those. The kiddie track, Lil' Speedy, is 42 inches and he should clear it comfortably. Slavik at two clears nothing. The Speed Track lists a 400 lb double-kart capacity, so an adult may be able to take Cash as a passenger, but that is not stated anywhere on their site. Ask at the ticket window, and measure Cash at the house before you leave so nobody finds out in the parking lot.

Race City's website is not maintained. It still carries a "closed for the winter, reopening February 2026" banner while also listing this week as Saturday and Sunday from noon, Monday through Wednesday closed. Call before you drive.

Other options in Panama City

Shipwreck Island Waterpark — 12201 Hutchison Blvd, (850) 234-3333. Listed today at 10:00a to 5:00p. They do not publish a season end date, so call first. The best answer if it is brutally hot, and the only one of these with real water for all three kids.

St. Andrews State Park — 8:00a to sundown, 365 days, $8 per carload, (850) 708-6100. The protected side here is the usual recommendation for small children, so it is worth asking at the gate what the water is doing. Cheapest option on this list by a wide margin.

Gulf World Marine Park — (850) 234-5271. Dolphins and sea lions, about $24, under five free. Their booking page lists the habitat as in maintenance, so call before you build the day around it.

Pier Park — open-air shopping and dining with amusement rides on site. The low-effort evening if the karts and mini golf run short and nobody wants to cook.

Under the oaks

Sunday, Sept 6Shade day

A break from sun and sand that isn't a break from being outside. Recovery day after Panama City.

  • Eden Gardens State Park
181 Eden Gardens Rd, 15 min north on 395. Moss-draped live oaks, a white antebellum house, a fountain, picnic tables and a dock on Tucker Bayou. Deep shade the whole way, which matters most for Snejana. Small honor-system entry fee — bring a few singles.
  • Back for lunch and naps
  • Second beach shift
Light's better, crowd is thinning, and the water's at its warmest.
  • The Big Chill 30A
7000 E 30A, Watersound, 8 minutes east. Open-air food hall, arcade, ice cream, big screen, and they play a kids' movie on the lawn most evenings. Free parking, no wait, everybody eats what they want. This is the easiest dinner of the week with all three.
  • Ghost crab hunt
Cash and one adult, flashlights, right after dark on the beach in front of the access. Hundreds of them come out. This is the thing he'll remember from the whole week.

Wide open sand

Monday, Sept 7 · Labor DayHoliday

Everyone else is either driving home or crammed onto the popular accesses. Go where there's room.

  • Deer Lake State Park
6350 E 30A, 8 minutes east. $3 in the honor box. The boardwalk from the lot to the sand is a solid ten-minute walk through the dunes — you need the wagon, and one adult wears Snejana. Payoff is the emptiest good beach on 30A. Restrooms and a rinse shower at the lot, none at the sand.
  • Home, rinse, lunch, naps
  • Pool, then start the pack-out
Pull the sandy gear onto the porch, run a load of laundry, box up what you won't use again. Tomorrow morning gets ugly otherwise.
  • Last dinner out
Crowds thin sharply Monday evening. Seagrove Village MarketCafe or Old Florida Fish House. Go at 5, not 6.

Encore, then home

Tuesday, Sept 8
  • One last hour on the sand
Shell hunting, no chairs, no setup. Cash picks five to take home.
  • Shower, load, sweep
Check under every bed and behind the shower curtain. Loveys get left behind at beach houses more than anywhere on earth.
  • Roll out
Post-holiday Tuesday, US-331 north is clear. Lunch in Opp or Luverne.
  • Home

Set II

When it rains or the flags go red

There's a 35–45% storm chance most afternoons this week, and a red or double-red flag day is entirely possible in September. Have these in your pocket so nobody has to invent a plan with three tired kids in a rental house.

Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park

Fort Walton Beach · 45 min west · 9:00–5:30 daily

The best bad-weather pick for this exact age spread. Dolphin and sea lion shows on a schedule, touch tanks, mostly covered. Cash gets shows, Slavik gets animals, Snejana rides. Book any animal encounter online ahead — they sell out.

The Big Chill 30A

Watersound · 8 min east · 7:00a–10:00p

Covered seating, arcade, ice cream, movie on the screen. Costs nothing to show up and works for two hours on short notice.

Coastal Branch Library

437 Greenway Trail · 20 min · closed Sundays

Free, air conditioned, genuinely good children's section. Underrated when you need ninety quiet minutes and everyone's had enough of each other.

Baytowne Wharf, Sandestin

Miramar Beach · 30 min west

Village square with a playground, candy shops and Blast Arcade nearby. The zipline and ropes course are Cash-only and probably a next-trip thing.

Grayton Beach State Park

357 Main Park Rd · 12 min west

Backup beach if Eastern Lake is packed. Big lot, real restrooms, kayak rentals on Western Lake — the lake side is calm and shallow when the Gulf isn't.

Skip: Big Kahuna's

Destin · 35 min · reduced Sept hours, closed Tuesdays

Full-price admission for a three-year-old and a nine-month-old who can ride almost nothing, plus paid parking. Not worth it with this crew.

What each of them actually needs

Cash

6 years

  • He needs one thing per day that's his: crab hunting, the boogie board, the shell hunt, the arcade.
  • Give him a job. Wagon captain, sunscreen checker, shell counter. It cuts the whining in half.
  • He's the only one who can handle a full afternoon out. Split up sometimes — one adult and Cash, one adult and the little two.
  • Watch him hardest in the water. Six-year-olds overestimate themselves and 30A has a double sandbar that builds real rip currents.

Slavik

2, almost 3

  • He's fast, he has no fear of water, and he can't swim. He wears the vest anywhere near the pool, full stop.
  • Two hours is his beach ceiling. Leave before he tells you he's done.
  • The nap is not optional. Every bad evening this week traces back to a skipped nap.
  • He'll eat sand. Everyone eats sand at two. Keep water close and don't make it a fight.

Snejana

9 months

  • Shade, always. Tent up before she comes out of the carrier.
  • Sunscreen is fine at her age, but shade and fabric do most of the work.
  • The warm shallow lake outfall at Eastern Lake will be her favorite place on earth.
  • She overheats faster than anyone will notice. Offer fluids constantly and pull her inside by 10:30.
  • Protect her sleep space hardest — that's what determines whether the adults enjoy this trip.
